Whilst re-packaging the O’Conor collection recently we discovered an ambrotype photograph of Sir Nicholas O’Conor (ref: OCON 16/1/7). This image, likely dating from the 1860s, is a wet plate collodion negative process that turns into a positive image when framed with a black backing. Being glass, and therefore fragile, the item required a bespoke enclosure to protect it from handling and other potential damage.
Sir Nicolas O’Conor joined the Diplomatic Service in 1866. He had a variety of postings, including Secretary of Legation at Peking (1883-6), acting as Chargé d’Affaires at the Legation (1885-6); Secretary of Legation, Washington (1886); Consul General, Bulgaria (1887-92); envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary to the Emperor of China and King of Korea, Peking (1892-5); envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary to the Emperor of Russia (1895-8); and Ambassador to Turkey (1898-1908).
