Churchill’s reply to Acland, 9 October 1938
“The answer is that there has been for several years no chance of catching up except by a combination or grand alliance of Powers, great and small, coupled with intense national effort. The disaster of Czechoslovakia has annihilated all possibility of a combination which can restore the situation in Europe. Nevertheless, night and day work by the whole of France and England might put us in a position where the Dictators might find easier prizes elsewhere. …”
